With around 10% of the Australian continental land mass adversely affected by mining, it is timely that State Governments look closely at their role in managing the damage. With the recent closure and winding up of the Yabula Nickel Refinery at Townsville creating focus on corporate governance, it is appropriate that corporations not be seen to be running away from their responsibility but indeed be seen to be leading in this field.

With the significant advances made in this area by Mr Peter Andrews OAM (for his services to Australia in land care), it is now not only possible to return the landscape to its original condition but to greatly improve on this minimum position by creating extremely viable agriculural property. Creating in effect another asset with its own separate income stream as the mining operation progresses in parallel.

There is now no reason not to remediate landscapes provided the planning is done to mitigate significant costs associated with bulk earth moving at the outset.
